Do you know the name of the narrowest and deepest part of the Danube?
It is, in the opinion of many, the most beautiful part of its course – Small and Large Kazan (Mali I Veliki Kazan).
Flowing through these gorges, the Danube narrows to only 140m (remember, at Golubac it overflows to 6000m) and reaches a depth of 90m – even 30m below the level of the Black Sea.
In the morning, a thick fog can be seen in Kazan, which erupted from the whirlpools. As in a huge caldron, the water in Kazan seems to boil and foam, creating a natural phenomenon that cannot be seen in other parts of the Danube. Hence the name Kazan (Caldron).
