Belgrade and its surroundings

If you ask Google „What is living in Belgrade like, “ one of many answers will be: „Belgrade, Serbia, is characterized by reasonably priced housing. According to our city rankings, this is a good place to live with high ratings in cost of living, safety and tolerance.

Belgrade is one of the top ten city matches for 2.0% of Teleport users. “If you ask foreigners, they will tell you that Belgrade is a fantastic city with great vibes, food, parties, and people use to compare it to “a hidden Berlin in Eastern Europe.” It is cheap, multicultural, and eclectic.

And if you ask locals, most of them will tell you Belgrade is a polluted city, great for artists and
freelancers, and, on the other side, it’s a place where people are kind and hospitable.
All in all, the truth is somewhere in between, as always.

So, let’s start with some facts. Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. History says it took part in even 115 wars and was burnt to the ground a
record 44 times. That being said, its history was very turbulent and unpredictable, and it was
populated by Celts, Romans, Slavs, Byzantines, Hungarians, Turks, etc.
The meaning of its name is a white city (in Serbian Beograd), but its nicknames are also “the
Door to Central Europe” and “Gateway to the Balkans”. During Roman rule, Belgrade was
known as Singidunum.

Thanks to its amenities, Belgrade is a popular tourist destination – from excellent nightlife, tasty food, people’s openness, and lots of festivals.

So, what to see, visit and enjoy in Belgrade:

  • Knez Mihailova Street
  • Kalemegdan Fortress
  • The Cathedral of Saint Sava which is the largest orthodox church in use in the Balkans
  • Skadarska Street, a perfect place for bohemians and people that incline to history and old times
  • The old part of Zemun
  • Ada Ciganlija, know as the Belgrade Sea
  • Avala mountain (511m above sea level) and Avala Tower (205m) – the mountain is only 16km south of Belgrade and boasts over 100 species of bird, 600 plant species, and some great historical monuments (some dating back to 1442)
  • Memorial center Josip Broz Tito – ”House of Flowers”

„Photographed from the air, this city will never attract a curious beauty collector, no matter how good
the picture is.

Because it is not photogenic! But it can do something totally different – it will give you almost physical
pain from nostalgia, even to those who spent only a few days walking its streets, just like an old picture
of a lover can torture us to death.“ (Momo Kapor, Serbian novelist and painter).
